Rake It Up

A blanket of leaves looks beautiful over the lawn but if you don’t rake them up, they will suffocate your lawn. Clear as much debris as possible to ensure your lawn can breathe.

Get Mowing

Lower the mower cutting height to between 1-2 inches (depending on the type of grass). Don’t leave the grass higher than two inches because it could trap moisture and harbor disease. And don’t go lower than half-an-inch or you’ll expose the crown of the grass. Leave a little mulch on the lawn because it can return nitrogen to the soil during winter.

Aerate and Dethatch Your Lawn

This is important to undo compacting. If you don’t own an aerating tool, you can rent one or hire someone, including KS Greenday, to do it for you. Run the machine over your lawn to loosen any compacting. Also, dethatch the covering and seed any bare patches.

Apply Lawn Fertilizer

This will feed your lawn during the cold winter months. A sustained-release product will provide nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, and partially blended sulfate for quicker greening in the spring. Use a fertilizer spreader.

One Last Watering

Before putting your lawn to bed, give it one last watering. This will help activate the lawn fertilizer. Pull out weeds if they emerge during the winter.

Winters can put your lawn through some extreme conditions but with preparation, it will happily lay dormant. And then watch it come alive in spring.

Design Options

These days, your outdoor area is often an extension of your indoor area. It’s like another room during summer and attractive visual during winter. Outdoor design includes landscaping, decks, masonry, pools, spas, and cabanas. The best starting point is to work out how you use the space. Is it a relaxation zone, entertainment zone or fun zone or combination of the above? If your children like playing outside, you’ll need room to throw balls. If you like to host BBQs, you’ll need a different configuration. Perhaps you want to spend your summer months relaxing by a pool. Work out what your priorities are and this will help you create your ideal design. Some outdoor living companies use special computer software to show you exactly how your space will look after renovation – in three-dimensions. Using photos taken at your home, the end result can be seen with your very eyes before work begins. It removes the guess work.

One Contractor or Several?

Once you decide on the design, the next issue is whether to use one company to complete the entire task or to separate the jobs. The decision can depend on your time, expertise and budget. The advantages of using one company for everything—from pool installation to landscaping— means you and the contractor can more easily make adjustments to the plan. A traditional pool installer might not consider landscaping or other construction issues, which can lead to unexpected costs and unnecessary stress for the homeowner.

“We can get a job done in six weeks that would take four contractors 12 to 14 weeks to complete,” says Eric Konyves, President of outdoor living company, KS Greenday. “We’re not the kind of company that’s going to hard sell the pool and then leave the client three business cards to handle the hardscaping, landscaping, and cabana/grill stations.”

If money is an issue, some companies do work in stages allowing you to still get the space of your dreams but over a longer timeframe. It also means you don’t have to start with a brand new company and explanation each time.

When choosing a contractor, check their credentials and testimonials. Ask to see work done for other clients and ask lots of questions.

When to get started?

As the weather cools, now is the ideal time to get your outdoor space ready. With various construction durations, you need enough time to plan, design and build your dream space. Factor in delays from weather including rain and snow.

Renovating your outdoor space creates a wonderful space to live in and increases the value of your home. And when the weather warms up again next year, you’ll be ready to entertain, relax and have fun. You may never want to leave home again.

1. Use Your Skimmer – it’s best to tackle debris while it’s on the surface and before it settles to the floor of the pool or gets caught in the filter. This is particularly the case if you have many trees, and leaves, near your pool. Get into the habit of removing items every few days. It will save you time and reduce the amount of chlorine needed, which equals money in your wallet.
2. Test the pH levels – this indicates the cleanliness of the pool.  Ideally, the pH levels of a pool should be between 7.2 and 7.8. Inexpensive testing kits are available and easy to use.
3. Check for Leaks – it’s often hard to tell if a pool has a leak because there are many sources of water loss including evaporation and splashing. If you lose more than 2 inches a week, be concerned. The most common problem is separation between the plastic skimmer and the concrete that’s easily fixed with pool putty. Another technique to test for leaks is to half fill a bucket with water and mark the level inside the bucket. Place the bucket in the pool and mark the pool water level on the outside of the bucket. Leave the bucket in the pool for 24 hours. If the water level on the outside the bucket has gone down more than the water level on the inside of the bucket, you have a leak and should seek professional help.
4. Clean the Filter – a filter shouldn’t be entirely clean as a bit of dirt helps the filtration process but you don’t want too much flow through the filter or it will wear out more quickly. The maximum pressure reading level should be indicated on your filter.
5. Vacuum Once A Week – just like mowing the lawn, you should vacuum your pool methodically so you get every bit of dirt. It’s also good to wipe over the tiles. If you do this job regularly, it keeps the dirt and algae at bay. Even if you have an automatic machine, it’s a good idea to do a manual clean once a week in case there are any missed bits.

Keeping a pool maintained saves you money because you’ll use less chlorine and keep the machinery running for longer. And you’ll enjoy your swims even more.
